*POSSIBLE SPOILERS* Name Pronunciations/Meanings & Origins

Postby wren on July 30th, 2008, 3:23 pm

If often comes up that we need clarification on how to pronounce a name, or we are just curious about a name meaning/origin. We have noticed that sometimes a name meaning gives a "clue" about a character, although we don't always realize it until after the book! I'm opening this thread so we can share correct pronunciations and any research into name meanings/origins.

Many new readers who may not have had access to this topic on the old forum may want to ask about names on this thread. To those of us who have been around awhile, please add what you know to help others.

Names of characters that can be verified by book and page numbers may be put on the character bios section. However, questions about pronunciation and replies should be posted on this thread.

Please do not include name meanings/origins in the character bios, because name meanings/origins have many variations and are not included in the books. Any information about name meanings/origins should be posted here.

sin and I and others may be able to pull from our notes from the old forum to get us started! If you have a specific question, please jump in and ask! Also, feel free to jump in with observations and any information you find on character names! :D

Very good sis. I will post a fer just for the record:

Argeneau would be pronounced Ar--zsa--no

A-T-N is pretty accurate for Etienne.

Lucern is soft 'c' so it' sounds like 'loose - urn'
But 'Luke' is also correct for Luc, Perhaps with a slight suggestion of French on the letter 'u'.

Notte would be pronounced No-tay

hope this helps.

I like this thread guys, of course in my head, things come out a bit diff, and it's a bit late to change them now.

Etienne is more of an E than an A but eh.. i'm not syaing it's right! :D

Lucien and Lucern are a lot similiar in pronounciation for me, but Lucien is close to Lucius (from HP) and so i just assumed you pronounced them the same way :D

Notte- well i pronounce it like Knot or not. but again that's a personal preference. Until we have someone to read me the books so I don't get to make up my own pronounciations.. unfortunately I'll be pronouncing them wrong insde my head lol

I have a sound file that I recorded of Lynsay pronouncing the names of the characters so that we could help out the narrators of the audiobooks. I'll see if I can find somewhere to post it so that it can be downloaded to a computer or music player.

By the way, anyone listening to the audiobooks will soon realise that book narrators don't seem to take much notice of the helpful advice they are given.

I've posted the sound file on my MSN space and you can find it by opening the public folder, which should appear on the first line of items under the heading documents. If you open the folder the file, which is in MP3 format, is the only one present. If you right click with the mouse you can either save the file to your computer or play it with the whatever music software you use.

I'm not sure whether this location is static or whether it changes, so if anyone finds it doesn't work tomorrow please let me know and I'll reset the address again. Also, the file has been scanned and is free of any virus or other nasties so it is safe to open.

Great idea guys! Most of my pronunciations were correct. About four of my pronunciations were wrong. This MSN file truly helps. Thanks Mr.Spice. :D
