Ok ladies and gents. We have a new contest. This is for a signed copy of The Bite Before Christmas...

Please post your answers (maximum of 500 words) by midnight January 2nd. Good luck and we look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

Having spent most of my summers in the northern woods of Wisconsin as a child, I had many encounters with animals, but aside for a few insect bites, most of these encounters were benign and the animal was more afraid of me than I was of it.

The only scary experience I had with animals actually happened here in Chicago. When I still lived at home, we had a dog that it was my job to walk three times a day. One afternoon, after school, I had to walk the dog, but since I was also watching my little sister (at the time, she was about 6 or 7), so I had to take her with me. We were almost half way back home, when all of a sudden, I heard a bunch of growls and barks behind me. I spun around and saw a pack of dogs, that were actually slathering at the mouth, charging at me, my sister and the dog (who was, of course, on a leash, and couldn't get away). I knew I couldn't get away from all of them, so I picked up my sister and dropped the dog leash and started kicking at the dogs and screaming my head off. Fortunately, some of the neighborhood boys were not too far away and came running with their field hockey sticks and beat the dogs off of us. By that time, a little old man had come up to us and started yelling at the boys for hitting his dogs. His reason for letting the dogs out of his yard? He thought that they wanted to play with the pretty little dog and little girl! Our family dog ended up with three bits on her flank and I ended up with a few scratches on my legs, but my sister was fine since I was able to hold her up off the ground and away from the melee. Unfortunately for the little old man, the animal control officer took the dogs away from him, since he obviously couldn't keep them under control. The only good thing was that he had at least kept up their rabies vaccinations and we didn't have to worry about our dog getting infected.

When I was 5, we lived in a Log cabin on the side of a mountain. We had no electricity, and no Running water save for the creek that ran thru our Property. We had many encounters with wildlife. Most of the were funny, like when our dog played "Tag" with a mountain Lion. The two of them chased each other around the garbage pit, one would tap the other on the hind quarters, then turn and run the other way, and they would go back and forth like that for an hour or two. We also had a couple bears that lived on our property. One was a Mother bear with her cub, who would come down to the blackberry bushes on our land. The two of them would sit on one side of the Bushes, eating berries, while my Brother and I sat on the other side, also eating the berries. The other bear was a male, who liked to take naps in our outhouse. Usually if we disturbed him, he'd just grunt and wander off, but one day He got cranky and took a swipe at my Brother. Fortunately the bear wasn't trying to hurt him, just push him out of the way. My Brother was fine, other than a lump on his arm from the impact. The bear just growled (And passed gas EWWWW), and walked off.

Wow... great stories grlnxtdr and susan.

Susan: Wow... you were very lucky and kudos to you for thinking to get your sister above you out of harms way. Too bad your dog was bit. J

Grlnxtdr: Good story about your dog and the mountain lion playing tag as I would have LOVED to have seen that. That's so sweet! And the bears being so amiable.

Keep in mind it also could be a potentially scary turned nice or humorous encounter as well. I would agree with you that it's odd to have scary encounters as animals normally want to stay away from you. And if you're really stuck just talk about an encounter with a pet. This contest is not meant to exclude anyone. Just meant to stir up some interesting stories and get to know each other better. With the added bonus of a prize!

:-)

One morning around 3:00am, I got woken up by a loud KATHUMP. I was like ok what did you knock over this time cat. Seeing as how I was rudely awoken I went to the bathroom. When I opened the door I saw the cat facing the wall very still. Asked her what she was staring at when these eyes peered up over her head.

Coxed Hooch away from the work bench and saw this possum there. Penned her up in the bathroom so she would not get bitten nor scratched. Scared the heebie jeebies out of me it did. Apparently it crashed through the ceiling. I tried calling animal control, but got the voice mail. :/

So around 4 I called my father and he came over. He tried for over an hour. Then we called dispatch as it was not a 911 call. Within 10 minutes a officer showed up. He tried over an hour to catch this possum. When it was all said and done I had 6 police cars and 7 officers at the shop. One was a Lieutenant:.

When one of the officers finally caught and released the critter he asked me "your cat could not beat that "baby" possums ass?" Replied I did not want her to get bit and get rabies. He then informed me that possums are marsupials and don't carry rabies. Well I thought to myself if it had bitten a critter that did he could carry them and pass them to my baby.

Needless to say the shock of that event caused me to have a case of the stutters for about 2 days. I also could not go to the circle k across the parking lot as the cops had told the story and when ever I went in everyone started laughing. :/ Took around a month before I could show my face in there again.

Hey, Terri! I've got a question. Can we enter more than once? I've just thought of another critter story!

Personally and this is just my 0.02 worth I think we should just limit it to one entry per person. That way it will be fair to everyone. Just in case like Sue mentioned you think of another story. In MY opinion it would not be fair to those who just have one story to share :/

That's not a problem with me, sin. I was just asking. It was just that when Terri mentioned that it could be a funny situation, it triggered a memory of another funny tale. In fact, I'm tempted to relate the story and accept that I still only have one entry into the contest because it really is quite comical.

Sin, last I heard Marsupials are Mammals! According to the website I checked Rabies are spread among mammals! Possums are not likely to carry rabies, but that doesn't mean they can't if they have been exposed! You did the right thing, hope the officer didn't come down with anything nasty later. Once humans have contracted rabies there is no treatment. I have heard it is so contagious that someone doing an autopsy on a person who was found to have died from rabies has to take extreme measures! I have been watching too much tv lately, Billy the Exterminator, etc., but there are wildlife specialists who can deal with these type problems. One of my friends from high school has such a job and he works in the east TN area. Maybe you can get a business card from someone in your area to keep for emergency phone calls!

my story is not one that is scary.. but it was funny as I'll get out!! lol
My dog Winnie (which is a wiener dog) is who this story is about...
I was calling Winnie a fatty, which she has gained some weight, and she gave me the look that basically said "Look B****, you have no room to talk, Look at what you look like" and if looks could kill I would be dead.
I havent had any really scary encounters with critters..
